Job hunting during economic slowdown

August 5, 2008

(NECN) - Given the economy and unemployment figures, landing your first job or finding a new one isn't as easy as it used to be.

Here with some tips on how to job hunt during an economic slow-down is Lynne Sarikas, director of the MBA career center at Northeastern University's College of Business Administration.

*How do you make yourself stand out in the crowd?

*Etiquette important....prompt thank you note

*Bring a professional portfolio of your work - don't just talk about what you have accomplished - show them. Is there press coverage of your work? Did you design a brochure? Write a newsletter? Prepare a report?

*If you discussed a particular issue or challenge during your interview follow-up with some ideas and further thinking on the topic. Be careful not to be presumptuous but let them know you are still thinking about it.

*If you see a relevant article related to something you discussed, send it as a follow-up with a short note attached.

*Network like crazy - find everyone you know who works at the company and ask them to put in a good word with the hiring manager on your behalf.
